Not just Tech Mahindra’s Qatar head, more Indians in detention in potential graft probe

Around five Indians including Amit Gupta, who is Tech Mahindra’s country head for Qatar and Kuwait, have been detained by authorities in Doha in connection with a potential case of corruption.The Indian Embassy in Doha received consular access for Gupta on 28 March, said Randhir Jaiswal, the spokesperson for the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) Wednesday.
Speaking at a regular press briefing Jaiswal added that the Indian embassy officials have been in touch with the other Indians detained as part of the investigation by Qatari law enforcement.
“Our Embassy in Doha is closely following the developments in regard to the case. We requested consular access to meet Amit Gupta to ascertain his well-being and the same was given the same on 28 March 2025. We are also in touch with his family members and lawyers,” said Jaiswal.
He added: “We are aware that some Indians have been detained in Qatar for investigations in a case or cases that may be related. Their families have been allowed to meet them and they are able to call their families regularly. Our Embassy will continue to render all possible help to the individuals and their families.”
Gupta was detained by authorities on 1 January, 2025. No charges have been filed yet in the case, however, authorities have been investigating potential cases of corruption and Gupta was detained given his position as the region head for the Indian firm, as reported earlier by ThePrint. Asked about ongoing investigations into potential charges of corruption, Tech Mahindra a few weeks ago told ThePrint, “We remain in close contact with the family, providing necessary support to them. We are also actively coordinating with authorities in both countries and adhering to the due process. Ensuring the wellbeing of our colleagues is our top priority.”Gupta shifted to Doha in 2013, as a part of Tech Mahindra and is the region head for Qatar and Kuwait. Gupta’s family had originally denied charges that he was involved in potential data-theft. His mother Pushpa Gupta said that he was detained due to his position at the firm.
The family of Amit Gupta had reached out to the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), and Anand Mahindra, the chairman of Mahindra Group, for assistance. Hemang Joshi, the Member of Parliament representing Vadodara had promised the Gupta family of his assistance.This is the second high-profile case of Indians being detained in Qatar following the arrest of eight naval personnel in August 2022. Last year the Amir of Qatar had pardoned the right naval personnel, who were convicted of spying on the West Asian country’s submarine programme.
