NRI woman smothered in Punjab over 'insurance money', body kept in freezer

 (Sai Bureau)-Rajdeep Kaur, a US citizen originally from Punjab, was allegedly murdered by her in-laws in Kapurthala's Nano Mallian village, a media report said. The murder of the 32-year-old NRI took place on the night of January 19, and the police suspect the motive was to claim her hefty life insurance money.
Rajdeep, a mother of a five-year-old boy, arrived in Kapurthala on January 12. She was brought to India on the pretext of a relative's wedding, according to a report in The Tribune.
Rajdeep's husband, Manjinder Singh, is living illegally in the United States and hoping to obtain a green card.
Her in-laws, Daljit Kaur and Jagdev Singh, were arrested by Sultanpur Lodhi police for alleged complicity in the crime.
Furthermore, Rajdeep's husband, Manjinder Singh, who is still in the United States, has been charged in connection with the murder case.
"It is believed the woman was murdered as she had hefty life insurance coverage," The Tribune quoted Sultanpur Lodhi DSP, Babandeep Singh, as saying.
The post-mortem examination report, received on January 23, cited "asphyxia due to smothering" as the cause Rajdeep's death.
The murder became more disturbing when it emerged that Rajdeep's in-laws stored her body in a freezer at Sidhwa Dona village for two days before informing the Sultanpur Lodhi police.
Someone informed Rajdeep's parents, who reside in the UK, of her death through a telephone call.Concerned about the circumstances of their daughter's demise, her mother, Nirmal Kaur, travelled to India and lodged a complaint with Sultanpur Lodhi police on January 25.
Rajdeep's family alleges that she was subjected to constant torture by her husband, who pressured her to transfer all her property in his name for immigration purposes. Nirmal Kaur, expressing her suspicions, stated, "My daughter was called to India based on a lie about a wedding. It was a plan to kill her."
The family claims that Manjinder initially told them that Rajdeep had died due to a heart attack, while another relative mentioned gas from a room heater as the cause.
Sultanpur Lodhi police registered an FIR against Rajdeep's in-laws and her husband on Saturday, the same day the post-mortem examination report confirmed the cause of death as asphyxia.
