"The Future of Farming"

  We often take for granted today just how far & wide the agricultural industry has to travel to fully stock our local grocery stores, all year-round. With climate change becoming an undeniable part of life, we have to ask ourselves. How will our food be sourced in the upcoming years? With the population rise, the use of more land for housing & non-food producing businesses. How are we going to keep all of this in check? The short answer is we won’t. You may sometimes notice specific products gone from your grocery store, as micro-climates decrease in scale & more land becomes unusable for production, certain items we take for granted may become more scarce. That doesn’t mean we’ll lose out on those products, it just means it’ll become more expensive to source. Today we have the added benefit of using fillers & alternatives, so we may not see disruption at a huge scale. But what we do know is part of the future is indoor farming.
We’re referencing huge farms that resemble the server farms of today. Utilizing aeroponics will not only be beneficial in the near-future, it will become a necessity. There are plenty of good reasons to switch to aeroponics, we’ll use less water, fertilizer & land, for starters. Other entire industries may end up switching to this model of an indoor, controlled environment for production. A small reference to this was made in the recent dystopian/semi-futuristic game “Cyberpunk 2077”, where they mentioned a facility resembling a fish farm. This minor detail in the game could be foreshadowing for what we’re going to see coming up in the hit series called “Reality” (Real life). Why would we abandon conventional farming? Well we wouldn’t abandon it, conventional farming would abandon us. With the increase in inclement weather, soil erosion, crop failures among many other issues, it may just not be in the cards for us in the future.
This isn’t necessarily a bad thing. The more we build out automated-farming infrastructure, the easier it will become to source a variety of produce from relatively nearby. We won’t have to rely on the weather as much for general food production. Even better, the more land we save, the more land opens up for other opportunities. There are some downsides to this part of the future. Where will all the farm jobs go? How do we create a sustainable system for meat production on a large scale? What will be the solution for fruit trees & bushels? What foods will we no longer be able to enjoy because of climate change?
