Sara Ali Khan to Ananya Panday: Why is Kartik Aaryan the new Bollywood sensation?
Year 2011: Amid big releases like Ready, Shaitan, Zindagi Na Milegi Doabara and Singham, a film quietly hit the screens. A film about three friends and their "supposed" love stories. Undertones of misogyny and women-bashing disguised in the garb of a romantic comedy, director Luv Ranjan's Pyaar Ka Punchnama opened to mixed reviews. Despite divided opinions on film, one thing that earned the film a separate fan base was Kartik Aaryan's five-minute monologue. However, this new face was soon forgotten in the barrage of other newcomers in Bollywood. There were two forgettable films in between too: Kaanchi and Akaash Vani.
Year 2015: But he was still not done with films. Kartik made a grand return with Pyaar Ka Punchnama 2. The sequel to the hit first film was nothing more than serving the same old wine in a not-so-new bottle. Kartik's homecoming was lauded by a handful of fans of the franchise. But this too fizzled out.
Year 2018: Three years later, Kartik and Luv Ranjan decided to return with a vengeance. This time they had a new story and new title for their film. Bidding adieu to the Pyaar Ka Punchnama franchise, Kartik and Luv Ranjan decided to give a new spin to bromance with Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety. But little did this Gwalior boy know that the film was going to change his life forever.
The film set the cash registers ringing and the audience instantly fell in love with Sonu. So much so, that in no time, his fan pages mushroomed on social media, the paparazzi started following the current heartthrob and he was brushing shoulders with A-listers like Kareena Kapoor Khan.
At a time when his film was busy crossing the Rs 100-crore mark, Kartik had taken off to Singapore with Kareena for Manish Malhotra's fashion show. The pictures of him walking the ramp with Kareena were proof that he had truly arrived in Bollywood.
The massive success of Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety earned him the tag of a mass hero who could carry a film entirely on his shoulder. Out of his other Pyaar Ka Punchnama co-stars, from both the films, only Kartik Aaryan has come this far in Bollywood. Divyendu Sharma is now back to the spotlight with the hit web series Mirzapur but in films, Sharma's career never really took off.
Not so for Kartik. The new boy who made his debut in Bollywood as Kartik Tiwari, soon got himself a new second name - Kartik Aaryan, the extra 'a' for luck included.
In his own words, "Now people know who I am. Before the film [Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety], they knew me by face but not my name. I am no longer just catering to the youth. Now, taijis, chachis and mummies know me. For the first time in eight years, I have the option of choosing from a variety of scripts. I no longer need to pick up just about anything that comes my way. The options are better than before. I strived to become a priority for filmmakers, rather than an option. Sonu... made it possible."
Soon film offers started pouring in for Kartik, who once had to wait for years to bag a project. And as they, rest is history.
Year 2019: However, it's not only his line-up of films that has kept him in headlines. Kartik Aaryan has become a hot favourite with the ladies too. If girls are drooling over this eye candy, two of Bollywood's most-popular star kids have their eyes set on Kartik.
Sara Ali Khan has minced no words in declaring her admiration for Kartik Aaryan on national television with her father Saif next to her. Student Of The Year 2 actress Ananya Panday has already been spotted on dinner dates with him. Such has been the craze around this latest heartthrob of Bollywood. With two of B-Town's newest star kids fighting for Kartik's attention says a lot about this guy.
While Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety catapulted him to the league of A-listers in Bollywood, his upcoming films are his real test. Till now, we have seen him in a similar kind of film, with the same director and the same heroine (Nushrat Bharucha).
Luka Chuppi hits the screens next week. He is paired opposite a new actress: Kriti Sanon. Will he repeat the success of the Luv Ranjan genre of films with Luka Chuppi? March 1 will tell.
