Rahul promises new version of Congress
Seeks support to save ‘idea of India’
Promising to offer an updated version of the Congress in the next six months, party president Rahul Gandhi appealed to the Indian diaspora in Bahrain to support him in protecting the idea of India.
The Congress president is in Bahrain at the invitation of the Global Organization of People of Indian Origin.
Stressing that the Congress stands for bridging gaps, Mr. Gandhi hit out at the Modi government. “Instead of uniting people of all religions and communities to face the challenge to create jobs, the government is busy converting the fear being generated in jobless youth into hatred between communities.”
“Activists and journalists are threatened, they are shot dead for expressing their views. People are killed because of their religious beliefs. Dalits are beaten into submission. Judges investigating sensitive cases die under mysterious condition,” he said.
Asked what would be his top priorities if the Congress were to come to power again, he said the focus would be on creating jobs for the youth.
Mr. Gandhi said revamping the education system and making India a global hub of healthcare were the next key priorities.
On his party’s performance in the Gujarat elections, he said it did very well in the BJP’s stronghold and expressed confidence that the party would win the Karnataka elections later this year. “We have a solid leader and we will win the election there,” Mr. Gandhi said.
Earlier, he was hosted for lunch by Bahrain’s Foreign Minister and met Crown Prince Shaikh Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa.
