Bernie Sanders Buys Lakefront Vacation Home Offering Privacy

After considering several properties in North Hero, Vt., Sen. Bernie Sanders and his family have settled on a private, lakefront cottage that seems ideal for relaxing after exhausting months on the campaign trail.

The former presidential hopeful paid $575,000 for the four-bedroom home on the small Vermont island last week, listing and selling agent Franz Rosenberger of Coldwell Banker Islands Realty in South Hero confirmed to Mansion Global.

The house, which was originally listed at $598,000, has a main residence with three bedrooms and two bathrooms and a guesthouse with an additional bedroom and bathroom.

“It’s a private lot with a nice gradual shoreline perfect for all the family to get together,” Mr. Rosenberger said.

Sanders has four children and seven grandchildren, according to bio information on his website.

Mr. Rosenberger said he worked mainly with Mr. Sanders’ wife, Jane O’Meara Sanders, and their children, but that the senator visited the house they ended up buying in person.

The real estate agent said that the Sanders family liked the proximity of the North Hero house to their main residence in Burlington, a 35-minute drive away, and they were particularly fond of the “wonderful views,” which include Vermont’s Green Mountains and Lake Champlain.

The property, which has 500 feet of lakefront, dates from 1920, according to the listing, but the main house was built in 1986, said Rosenberger.

He said that working with the Sanders was a pleasant experience and described them as “incredibly nice, down-to-earth people.”

Mr. Sanders and his wife reportedly own a third home on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C.

Mr. Sanders’ press office did not respond to a request for comment.
